Hope this isn't to daft a question.
At the moment the tank has silica sand and some Ocean Rock, I am toying with the idea of changing the Ocean Rock with dark stone or "rainbow cobbles". I understand the ocean rock buffers the pH, if I replace the silica sand with aragonite coral gravel and aragonite coral sand do you think this would balance out ? _________________ 48ltr - 6 Neolamprologus Multifasciatus

I guess this has set and aged a bit because your question somewhat misses the point. If you are starting with good water for Tanganyikans; high pH and hardness, low nitrates and contaminates, whether your sand or rocks buffer is moot. Good water quality is dependent on everything else that's going on. If you are behind with your water changes, certain substrates can help but they don't make up for not doing your regular maintenance. Does that make sense?
